Ridgeway House Portrait
This is a house portrait of a property in the village of Ridgeway. Ridgeway lies just south of the South Yorkshire border, around 5 miles south-east of Sheffield City Centre. It is believed to be around 700 years old, and would once have been part of Sherwood Forest.
At 70x50cm, it is one of the larger watercolours that I offer. As with most of my watercolours, I started with a drawing and then painted in a series of washes, gradually building up the layers working from light to dark.
I used a photograph for reference that was taken back in February so the trees were looking very bare and there wasn’t much foliage in the garden. I wanted to make it look a bit more spring like, so I added leaves to the trees in the distance and the canopy overhanging the foreground.
Finally, it was framed with a gold frame - looking good and ready to hang on the wall!
